Miyakonojo City Library

Public Library | Miyakonojo, Miyazaki | 2018

The shopping mall, once built in the city center and shut down as the times have changed, is converted and rebirthed as a new municipal library. Taking advantage of the characteristics of commercial space, a pleasant shopping street and various storefront as a motif, we proposed public space where everyone can feel free to visit and choose own places to stay. In collaboration with the local furniture industry association, special wooden box furniture has been developed to display books flexibly. Other wooden furniture in various forms and functions is also scattered like pavilion in large scale space. The visitor has exceeded 100,000 people in 3 weeks after opening. Expanding the notion of conventional library, it aims to become a new type of public facility inheriting the “gene” of library, with regional editing department called “press studio,” new index search mechanism as well as studios for various activities.
